Calcined alumina is a synthetic raw material widely used in a variety of industries such as refractory, industrial and engineering ceramics, polishing materials for plastics, metal and glass, rubber and plastic fillers, paints and coatings and thermal spray powders. This product is obtained by heating aluminum hydroxide and converting it to the transition phases and eventually the alpha phase.

Calcined alumina is a synthetic raw material widely used in a variety of industries such as refractory, industrial and engineering ceramics, polishing materials for plastics, metal and glass, rubber and plastic fillers, paints and coatings and thermal spray powders. This product is obtained by heating aluminum hydroxide and converting it to the transition phases and eventually the alpha phase. In this process, the alpha phase gradually appears and its crystals begin to grow, depending on the percentage of alpha phase, the size of the crystals, and other properties of the desired thermal process. This raw material is classified according to the amount of sodium oxide, degree of calcination, the particle size and the distribution of particle size.

The following items are usually considered to select appropriate calcined alumina according to the application:

  • Crystal density: Low (soft), medium and high (hard) which vary depending on the degree and duration of calcination.
  • Powder specific surface area: decreases with increasing the degree and duration of calcination. However, the specific surface area of ​​alumina increases with decreasing the particle size.
  • Soda: Decreases with increasing calcination and chemical treatment.
  • Alpha phase value
  • Size of primary crystals

  Special properties of alumina include high hardness, high mechanical strength, high abrasion resistance and high chemical resistance. Reactive alumina (ultra-fine-grained alumina) reduces the percentage of water consumed and improves flow in low-cement, ultra-low cement, and self-flow constables. Some types of calcined alumina are used in abrasion- resistance-wear parts and alumina balls. Other types of calcined alumina with controlled calcination  and processing particle morphology and hardness in a uniform and controlled manner.

Polishing alumina grades are produced through controlled calcination and processing in order to obtain consistent particle hardness, shape and size distribution.
